Andrew M. Ward joined the Army partly to experience other cultures, but he mainly wanted to serve his country, his mother said. "I want everyone to know that he gave up his life ... so that we may someday live without terrorism, oppression and from barbaric leadership," Estrella O'Francia Tankersley wrote in a letter to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Ward, 25, of Kirkland, Wash., died Dec. 5 when he was hit by small-arms fire. He was stationed at Camp Howze, Korea. Tankersley described her son as a "gentle soul" who loved the outdoors. Ward's sister, Angela, said the family supported his decision to join the Army because they knew it would be an opportunity for him to develop. "It really made a man out of him," she said. Other survivors include his father, Donald L. Ward Sr.
