Jeremiah W.I. Schmunk

Schmunk
Age:   20
Hometown: Warden, WA
Date of Death: 7/8/2004
Incident Location: Baghdad

Branch of Military:   Army
Rank: Spc.
Unit: Company C, 1st Battalion, 161st Infantry Regiment, 1st Cavalry
Unit's Base: Moses Lake, Wash.

Jeremiah Schmunk was a high school wrestler who placed sixth in the state when he was a senior in 2002. "He beat the best when he was at his best," said Rick Bowers, Schmunk's coach. "That was an inspirational moment for all the kids on the team." Schmunk, 20, of Richland, Wash., was killed July 8 after an attack on his patrol near Baghdad. He was a member of the Washington National Guard. Bowers described Schmunk as "really friendly, sociable and a good friend of my youngest daughter. He would do just about anything for anyone. He's going to be missed." On the day he died, Schmunk called his mother, Shirley Schmunk to let her know he was OK and say that he loved her, said his uncle, John Daly. Before his deployment late last year, Schmunk was living in Richland and attended Columbia Basin College.

Hey Jere,
I just wanted to say thanks again. I still keep your picture on my wall at work, it keeps me motivated.
I still remember the day you made a wise crack about how "young" I was. You are only one day older then me kid! But thanks for putting me in my place.
I have a friend over there in Iraq right now. I still pray for him every day like I did when you and the boys were over there. I make sure to send him stuff every week, I guess in a way it's to make up for not doing it for you, Justin, Greg, Andy, and Ryan.
You were loved, and I know you know that. I still visit your grave when I get a chance to visit Warden. My aunt Virginia even let me steal her flowers to give to you because I couldn't find any in Warden.
Keep an eye on us down here, we could use your loving spirit.
Love, Marleen

Dear Jeremiah, How I long to be where you are now instead of in this world. How wonderful to be in our heavenly Father's bosom; to be held and comforted by the ultimate Father. How magnificent to stand in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ, our brother, friend and savior. In fact, I am envious of your current position and I am eagerly awaiting the time that our Father calls me home. "And the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the young lion and the fatted domestic animal toghether, and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed side by side, their young shall lie down together, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned chiod shall put his hand on the adder's den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. And it shall be in that day that the Root of Jesse shall stand as a signal for the peoples; of Him shall the nations inquire and seek knowledge, and His dwelling shall be glory." Well my young brother, you have already reached glory and God does not do anything that does not bring himself glory. I will be glad in that day when I can leave this physical body behind and enter the presence of the Lord. Look down on your family and comrades and help them to know that the only way to leave the pain of this world and horror of war behind is to give it to the only One who is able to handle such things. Soldiers often epitomize our Lord and Savior. They answer to a higher authority; they follow orders they may not wish to do and they lay down their lives for their brothers. Until the day when the earth is able to realize the peace and joy that heaven now enjoys and mankind will dwell in peace and love for each other, I bid you goodnight.
Agape, Debbie

My dearest son~ how much our lives have changed since you have been gone. With your birthday coming up soon, I always remember how special your birthdays were and maybe still are. I would start the morning out taking pictures of you while you were sleeping. You always had your finger next to your lips as if the angels were whispering special messages to you. When you woke up, it was always with that silly grin on your face, as if you had just pulled a quick one on someone...again. I remember how we would shop for presents for someone else to give to them for your special day. You always liked to share. I wished that we could have been together for your 21st birthday. Your friends were there for you, Nathan & Wil stayed with you all night, falling asleep beside you at your grave, they didn't want you to be alone. There were so many beer bottles there, I would sneek in and carry them all off. That year, even the city police kept a watch over you and your friends. So many stories and tears were shared at your grave site. On your 22nd birthday, I called Sgt.(?)David and spent an hour visiting with him on the phone. Thank you for the great present, he was a very nice man.

Bonnie, some of the Allens and I have been going to the Grant Co. Demo Derby, even Chyrstal and Lisa C. were there last year. It has always been tradition to be at the Demo. Remember how we would sit next to the track and get hit by the dirt clods when the cars flew by. How I miss the laughter and goofing off we would do. Poor Grandma, she tried. You were always a great date. What shall we do this year, demo derby....I miss you so much, I love everyone that is there for us, they try, but behind closed doors the tears still flow. But as long as I can cry, I'll be ok. Maybe Jerold and Mike can go?????????? You are still my breath............your best girl, mom. Whose hugging you now???
