In 1982 Mike joined the Army and faithfully served his country until his death. His assignments included Ranger Scout Platoon Leader (75th Airborne Rangers, Ft. Lewis, WA); Ranger Instructor (Ft. Benning, GA); Staff and Faculty (Sergeants’ Major Academy, Ft. Bliss, TX); Operations SGM (173rd Airborne Brigade, Camp Ederle, Italy), and Operations SGM (Iraq). Mike was with the 173rd during the invasion of Iraq in March 2003 and was commended by his commanding officers for his year of service in Kirkuk.

Mike’s awards and decorations include: Ranger Tab, Combat Infantryman Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Parachutist Badge, Master Parachutist, Humanitarian Service Medal, Expert Infantryman Badge, six Army Achievement Medals, six Army Good Conduct Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, four Military Service Medals, two National Defense Service Medals, Army Service Ribbon, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, and Valorous Unit Award. As a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, Mike served the organization as well as it served him. He celebrated his sobriety date as April 1, 1989. During the past 15 years, Mike sponsored many men in AA and started several meeting groups when he was overseas. Mike is survived by his son, John, and his former wife, Sherry Fay Clements; his daughter and son-in-law, Shawn and Gary Hinson.
